At reading time, students have five choices. They must do all of them during the course of a week, but they have the freedom to choose the order. The choices are: 1) Read to self, 2) Work on writing, 3) Read to someone, 4) Listen to reading, 5) Work on spelling.
In literature circles, each student as a specific job to do to prepare for their meetings. These students are having a meeting about the book Socks by Beverly Cleary. One is the "Discussion Director." Another has the job called "Vocabulary Enricher." A third student undertakes the role of "Literary Luminary." Another student has the job of "Checker" giving the teacher a report on how well the other member of the group performed their jobs. The students divide their reading into four sections and plan four meetings, and rotate jobs. That way each student does each job by the time the book is finished.
