In fourth grade writing, we will have three units of study:
1. In narrative writing, we learn how to craft a story consisting of characters and events.

2. When we practice expository writing, we explain what we know and understand.

3. During the opinion writing unit, we learn how to express our point of view and support it with three or more reasons.

Spelling and Grammar                                               PATHS

Picture
Spelling lessons are individualized. At the beginning of the year, everyone will take a special spelling assessment. Using the test results, students can begin learning at their own spelling level and move up gradually. This way, they can be successful every step of the way.

PATHS stands for Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies. We use this program to learn how to get along with others and develop our self-control and problem solving skills.

MATHEMATICS!

Picture
Math is everywhere. It's a very important part of our daily lives. In addition, it is the foundation of a good education. The world runs on math! Fourth graders build on everything they learned in third grade, increasing the difficulty and challenge. We will focus on how to be competent problem solvers.

We will be getting new science kits this year. It will be fun and exciting to do science experiments together. The name of our new curriculum is STEMscopes.

Social Studies

Picture
Hooray for geography! The social studies focus in grade four is getting to know our country's political and physical geography. At the end of the year we have our "States Fair."

Physical Education

Picture
Physical education teacher Mrs. McDonald works hard helping students develop eye-hand coordination and gross motor skills through sports. P.E. is the favorite subject of many. Physical exercise helps kids learn in class. See Mrs. McDonald's fantastic website.

Music

Fourth graders have music twice in our 6-day cycle. They sing a wide variety of songs, learn to read musical notation, play instruments, develop rhythm, and create performances. Click to see Mrs. Farrissey's  beautiful website.
